Opus One Moments Stewardship

How Does Opus One Safeguard Vines During Frost Season?

Frost protection

Spring brings a period of heightened vigilance. At Opus One, frost protection begins at bud break, when new growth is most vulnerable to cold temperatures and every decision carries lasting impact.

Our approach is built on diligence, precision, and balance – pairing advanced technology with hands-on stewardship in the vineyard.

As temperatures cool overnight, a frost alarm system continuously monitors conditions across the Estate. When nighttime temperatures approach 38-40*F, temperature dependent, automatic alerts are sent directly to a designated cell phone, ensuring immediate awareness.

Throughout frost season, one mechanic and one vineyard team member remain on call during the night. When an alert is triggered, the on-call team member checks thermometers placed throughout the Opus One Estate. These readings guide block-by-block decisions – because no two sites respond the same way. Elevation, exposure, and location all influence temperature, and our response reflects those nuances.

If temperatures fall to critical levels, wind machines are activated in the affected blocks. By circulating air, these machines prevent cold, freezing air from settling around the vines, protecting tender new growth from damage. Each wind machine is carefully sized and placed according to site-specific needs – an approach that favors precision over uniformity.

Frost protection at Opus One is never passive. Alongside technology, people remain essential. Team members physically check thermometers, manually activate wind machines when needed, and make real-time decisions in the vineyard – often between 2am and 6am, when conditions are at their coldest. Ground cover management and seasonal development are also considered in tandem, ensuring that vineyard practices work together to support vine health during this critical stage.

It is a system built on redundancy and care: automated alerts and human judgment, data and experience, preparation and presence. Because protecting the vines at their most fragile moment is not about a single tool or action – it is about commitment, attentiveness, and respect for the land.

This is how we steward the vineyard through spring. Quietly. Carefully. Without compromise.
